08.30 – The group is off to do a tour in the city of Athens, hosted by our experienced and talented experiential tourist guides.

The city of Athens is not only the historic capital of European thought, but also a universal symbol of humankind’s achievements in cultural and artistic expression. Wisdom and power were both crucial components of Athens’ exceptional reputation in the ancient world. Today, the modern city of Athens struggles with austerity measures and urban dissonance to take back its lost balance in moderation and reason.

Athens represents in itself that exceptional mix of oldest history and modern vibrant culture, hard to compete with. The capital of Greece, it kept most splendid monuments along the centuries, so much worth seeing.  Among the pearls, there stands Acropolis, placed in the center of the metropolis, a splendid spot that opens an amazing view on the city. In Athens, you can find it all: majestic monuments dedicated to Greek democracy; worshipped antique figures of Greek Gods along with splendid Christian churches; contemporary architecture along with ancient ruins. The city of contrast, it embarks you easily into a vacation mood the moment you step on the Greek land.

19.30 – Dinner at a selected restaurant in the city center follows.

History and religions, mingled together with spirituality, benefitting from classic architecture and the choice of the geographical place made this place unique in the whole world. The amazing theatre and temples restored over the last decades present a visual pleasure and bring you back to the basics of human beliefs.
Arachova is a known village, hanging on the rocky edge of Mt. Parnassus 1 km above the sea level with the largest ski resort in the country. The traditional house architecture and the surrounding wooden forests with black pine trees as part of the Parnassus National Park make this place a quite unique destination. Countless trails and roads for the hikers and historical monuments like the famous Time Rock are top things to see. The 6 surviving monasteries out of the 24 that existed there are a religious attraction for the guests. +5th day (overnight stay in Zagorohoria)
07.00 – Breakfast (1h.30m)

The enigmatic Zagorohoria is located in Epirus, Northern Greece, its name translating from Slavic as “beyond the mountains”. This mysterious gateway comprises 46 traditional stone-and-slate villages spread on the Pindus Mt. range.

Everything in Zagorohoria is a place to visit: the villages, with their specific stone architecture of houses, cobbled roads; breathtaking views on Vikos Gorge, who alone can bring sensations lasting for months; serpentine rivers and traditional stone made bridges, each a chef-d-oeuvre; and for the most courageous – the lake of Drakolimni (Dragon’s Lake) on the Mt. Smolikas.

Famous bridges lying between the villages of Zagori: the stone arch bridge of Petsionis, the charming Voidomatis bridge towards Papigo, the captivating stone arch bridges of Kokkori and Noutsou.

08.30 – We visit the agritourism guest house in Elafotopos, where you are presented of the agricultural work in their farm, having alongside the opportunity to participate in preparation of bread, traditional pita, butter or even in the harvest of local crops.

12.00 – Departure to the traditional settlement of Kapesovo, hiking to the stone “Skala of Vradeto”.

Kapesovo, another village of Zagori, translated from Slavic as “garden”. The village has a view of Vikos canyon, fabulous at certain spots. Its stone-built houses and roads framed by the green scenery offer an incredible mélange of architectural beauty. Kapesovo used to be conncected to Vradeto through the famous Skala of Vradeto (Staircase of Vradeto), build into the steep mountain as a serpentine road, the only communication between Vradeto and the civilization until 1974. The Staircase is a great work done by the craftsmanship of Epirotic artisans.

In the centre of Kapesovo you can discover a cylindrical cistern 2 meters deep carved in the solid stone – it used to store water for the church it belonged to.

We hike for another 45 min to Beloi to admire the most beautiful view of the Vikos Gorge! The Beloi view is especially beautiful in the sunset. It is translated as “balcony” in Slavic and offers exactly that feeling.

Return to the traditional village of Vradeto for snacks at the traditional little coffee shop.

Vradeto, at the height of 1340m on Pindos range, is the highest located and least populated village of Zagorochoria. Its only connection to the world in the past was the famous Skala of Vradeto (Vradeto Staircase) that linked it to Kapesovo village, the communication corridor until 1974. Skala is a stone-paved trail into the steep mountain with breathtaking view on Vikos Gorge. It is still in shape and many visitors take it to get to Kapesovo for a hike.

Board the bus and head to the guesthouse.

19.30 – Dinner at a themed restaurant (specializing in mushrooms) in the village of Vitsa.

Rest of the evening – Free time for rest.

+6th day (overnight stay in Zagorohoria)
07.00 – Breakfast (1h.30m)

08.30 – Hiking tour begins at the old stone paths and the Zagorian villages residents of the of previous century. We then continue on to the “bridge of Mizios” located on the old path that connects Koukouli with Vitsa, built in 1748.

Vitsa the largest Zagori village, the balcony of the Vikos Gorge, opens an amazing view on the Gorge from an altitude of 955m. In Vitsa you can find traditional stone houses, built into the form of cascade due to a specific architectural improvisation. Its antique walls are dating back to 2000 BC.

As most villages in the region, Vitsa is defined by its bridge. Here one can enjoy the double-arched bridge of Missios, impressive and charming through its uniqueness. Visiting the churches of Agios Nikolaos, Kimissis and Taxiarchon, the monastery of Prophet Elias, and the folk museum describing everyday life of Zagoria from the 16th to the 18th centuries are things to do if you’re around.

Afterwards, we walk a track through the gorge of Vikos [at the beginning of the gorge].

According to Guinness Book, Vikos Gorge is the deepest gorge in the world. Part of Pindus mountains, it spreads for 20 km in Northern Greece, lays in the heart of of Vikos-Aoos National Park, a UN World Heritage. It presents a diverse relief with massive rocky cliffs, steep slopes and abrupt altitudinal changes, carved for ages to its present shape by the Voidomatis River, making it a fantastic natural monument.

The geological isolation left the wildlife come with rare species of plants, birds, serpents and amphibians, uniquely from Epirus. The Aoos and Voidomatis rivers host also 7 fish rare species. A 12 km hike with three various routes is available for tourists who want to enjoy a truly exceptional experience.

We then pass over the stone bridge of Noutsou or Kokkoris, one of the most beautiful bridges of Zagori with a height of 13 meters and a length of 23.50 meters. We continue on the same track, climb up through the hills and then walk over the “Kalogerikos bridge” or “bridge of Plakida”, located a few meters before the entrance of the Kipoi Zagoriou village.

We continue onto the stone bridge of Mylos in the village of Kipi, then across the stone bridge of Kontodemos or Lazaridis and finally walk up to the village of Koukouli, ending our hiking tour in the village square, where we will have the opportunity to enjoy a hot beverage and a snack in the traditional stone-built café of the village, under a huge platanus!

Aristi village is the heart of Zagorohoria. With the spectacular view on Vikos Gorge and surrounded by forests of beech and chestnut trees, Aristi is a hidden gem of the Pindus Mt. The mountain’s peaks, covered in snow from early autumn to late spring give a sparkling feeling to whoever finds themselves in Zagori. Among this shiny scenery, you get the houses that reflect the traditional character of the region with the stone exteriors hiding from cold. Hikes in the deepest in the world Gorge, climbing the peaks or discovering Ottoman traders’ footprints are among top activities for travelers.

Pappigo is made up of two famous villages, Megalo (big) Papiggo and Mikro (small) Papiggo. The last is more famous due to its scenic location at the feet of Mt. Timfy, 3 km from the Megalo Pappigo, opening the view on snowy peaks of the mountain. However, it’s the mix of scenic view and the Zagori style village that makes it so desired for the destination. The houses are big two-storied mansions with large orchards and traditional chimneys and stone fountains built here and there. The cultural and historic places make the whole Pappigo a national historic monument worth visiting. Trekking in the paths of Timfy is a must do in Zagori.
Return to our guesthouse for rest and refreshments.

Rest of the evening – Free time for rest.

08.30 –Depart for Ioannina.

Walking through the city, around the castle, and to the museum.

Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, is stretched on the shore of the natural lake Pamvotida. The lake shapes the climate and the character of the city, remaining its symbol. Ioannina is multicultural, having passed through a blend of religions years ago. Here, you can easily find Christian, Islamic and Jewish interactions that left amazing cultural and archaeological monuments. Among them, one might enjoy visiting Veli Pasha Mosque, the Dodoni Sanctuary and Theatre, KehilaKedoshaYashan Synagogue etc. Perama Cave, in close proximity to Ioannina, is a product of karst formation, carved for million years, a natural sculpture of truly stunning proportions absolutely worth visiting. Lord Byron died here, leaving its trace in Greece forever.

George and Stelios were my travel mates back in 2016 on my 3rd journey to Greece. We were travelling as a group, all strangers between us. We hiked around Macedonia, Epeirous & Thessaly for almost 1 month and I must admit it was a life time changing experience. Apart from the breathtaking scenery, we had the chance to know each other better. Their love for hiking, nature, arts and gastronomy and their willingness to share this love with others, allowed me to undestand modern Greece in a much deeper way. Since then, I travel to Greece at least once a ...

I always thought Greece as the country with the most beautiful islands and beaches. And I traveled a lot around the country for at least 6 times in 10 years to be able to confirm that. Yet, It wasn't always a beatiful experience. Crowded islands in the summer is something you would like to avoid, if you were a demanding person like me.  So last year I decided not to follow the herd. I booked a hiking tour in Zagorochoria. Stelios was our group leader and I had one of the best times in my life. Visiting continental Greece in ...
